China Prep in New York: Chinese Summer Program

August 16-23, 2010

Study Mandarin and explore Chinese culture with New York City as your classroom in this high school Chinese language program! The goal of China Prep in NY is to deepen a small and select group of participants’ understanding of China and Chinese through the lens and resources of New York City. Attend Chinese language class in the morning and visit a modern Chinese art gallery in the afternoon. Discuss U.S.-China trade relations in culture class and visit with a prominent company owner with business interests in China. From art museums to Buddhist temples to Chinatown wet markets, this is the ideal environment outside of China to explore Chinese culture while building your language skills.

Our CP in NY high school summer program is also excellent preparation for travel to China.  If you’d like to improve your Mandarin and learn more about China before traveling across the Pacific, this is the program for you. The 2010 programs can be combined with the Shanghai Expo and Career Exploration for an incredible summer of travel and immersion in Mandarin and Chinese culture from the inside out.

China Prep in NY is a day camp.  Mornings will consist of two hours of Mandarin class, taught by seasoned bilingual educators. Participants will be given a placement test to assess their level of Chinese and assist in adapting the course to meet their needs. Language class will be followed by an hour of Chinese culture lessons.

In the afternoons China Prep program staff will lead daily field trips under themes such as history, art, business, modern society, religion and politics.  For instance, students might discuss Buddhist history and thought in China while visiting a Tibetan exhibit at The Rubin Museum of Art. To learn about international careers, participants might meet with executives of a Chinese-U.S. company.  All classes and field activities are designed to maximize interactivity so that participants engage with the material and topics.  Participants won’t just listen to lectures; our high school summer programs constantly provide opportunities for them to see and experience for themselves.
