HONG KONG
Kick off your high school travel experience by spending three days studying the history and culture of this former British Colony. Take an evening walk down the Avenue of the Stars boardwalk of Victoria Harbor. Ride the Star Ferry for views of both Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. Ascend Victoria Peak via tram for a hike and stunning views. For lunch, feast on dim sum, a Cantonese specialty. Visit the Hong Kong Museum of History. Stroll through the Temple Street night market. Travel on a ferry through Victoria Harbor to Lantau Island, the largest “outlying” island in China. Visit a monastery complex and the world’s largest outdoor seated bronze Buddha statue. Take a walking tour of Hong Kong Island’s colonial buildings, markets, and temples.
KUNMING
Visit the capital of Yunnan Province, heralded as the starting point of the southern Silk Road. Home to over 26 ethnic minority groups, Yunnan has a rich and diverse culture. Meet with one of the many NGOs based in the region to learn about organizations making a difference in the local community.
DALI
Travel to the picturesque city of Dali. Spend time in Dali’s old town and boat on Erhai Lake. Visit villages around the lake including Zhoucheng Village where they make local batik. Experience the local Bai minority culture.
LIJIANG
Drive to Lijiang stopping at Shaxi Township enroute, a beautiful city home to the Naxi people, descendants of Tibetans. Wander through the narrow cobblestone streets and the Old Market Square. Sample pu’er tea, a Yunnan specialty. Take a bus to the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Ride the gondola partway up the peak for stunning views of glaciers and the surrounding area. Drive to the Yak Meadow for a peaceful walk near Snowflake Lake.
TIGER LEAPING GORGE
Take a dramatically scenic hike at one of the deepest gorges in the world. Wedged tightly between titanic cliffs, the river is so narrow here that, according to legend, a hunted tiger made his escape by leaping to the other side!
ZHONGDIAN
Explore Zhongdian, the beginning of the Tibetan world. Visit the Ganden Sumtseling Gompa, an active Tibetan monastery with over 600 monks and 300 years of history. Discuss Tibetan Buddhism and its history, art, and religious practices. Return to Hong Kong via Kunming.
