China Prep Summer 2009 Youth Trips
China Prep brings students face-to-face with the realities of modern China. Over the past thirty years, China has followed a trajectory of rising power and influence. Because of this unparalleled growth, understanding China is essential to understanding the world today. Our goal is to prepare young adults with the structure, tools, and confidence to embrace the future in a globalized world with China and the United States at its center. To meet this goal, China Prep designs experiential tours to foster participants’ personal growth and to have a lasting impact on their views of China.
For Summer 2009, China Prep will organize two youth trips. Click on the links below to learn more about each trip.
Four-week China trip: June 29 – July 27, 2009
Two-week China trip: August 3 – August 17, 2009
China Prep Summer 2009 Four-Week Summer Trip to China
On our four-week trip (June 29 – July 27), participants will gain an in-depth perspective on modern China through travel to Beijing, Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Sichuan province. Through hand-on activities, we will explore famous sites and local life. Students will learn about China across a diverse range of themes including the arts, business, entertainment, and the environment, and they will meet professional individuals shaping China in these areas.
To gain a deeper appreciation for some of the challenges facing China today, this trip also includes a one-week community service project in Sichuan province in a location affected by the earthquake. China Prep partners with Habitat for Humanity to arrange for trip participants to help build a house for a family in need in this area. This unique experience will help students appreciate recent events first-hand and give back to the communities we will visit.
The four-week trip also provides the opportunity for students to build and use Mandarin Chinese language skills. Throughout the trip, China Prep organizes several structured language classes to teach practical skills for living and traveling in China. Program activities create situations for students to utilize these skills on a daily basis. Whether participants have studied Mandarin before or have never spoken a word of Chinese, our goal is that they will develop the confidence to use Chinese in real-world situations and master several essential language skills. In conjunction with our travel and experiential activities, we hope to inspire participants to continue Mandarin language study and stay connected to China in the future.
